ISO 14001:2026 Changes from ISO 14001:2015
While the new version of your Environmental Management System (EMS) does not introduce any new requirements from ISO 14001:2015, the ISO 14001:2026 does highlight major trends.
Chapter 4 – Context of the Organization
Expanded Context of the Organization: While 2015 required internal/external issue analysis, 2026 demands explicit, rigorous scrutiny of climate change, biodiversity loss, and natural resource availability.
Chapter 5 – Leadership
Stronger leadership accountability.
Chapter 6 – Planning
Life-Cycle Perspective: Life-cycle thinking is no longer abstract; it must now explicitly influence the scope of the EMS and the evaluation of environmental aspects from raw material sourcing to end-of-life.
Managing Change: In order to successfully reach your intended outcomes, changes must be managed.
Chapter 7 – Support
Clarified support requirements.
Chapter 8 – Operation
Operational Control Shift: The focus has moved from merely “outsourced processes” to a broader oversight of all externally provided processes, products, and services (the entire supply chain).
Chapter 9 – Performance evaluation
Internal Audit Objectives: Internal audits must now define specific objectives for each audit, in addition to the standard scope and criteria.
